A requirement in law (e.g. the Freedom of Information Act 2000 in the UK or the FOIA in the US) for public bodies to publish certain information.
Beyond what must be published proactively, such laws oblige public bodies to provide data held by them to citizens on request, unless a specific exemption applies — for example where the data is confidential. Comparable legislation exists worldwide, such as the Right to Information Act 2005 in India.
